Ancient History, Recreation & Beauty Describe this Unique Area
The history of Farmington dates back over 2,000 years when the Anasazi "basket makers" lived in what are now known as "pit houses" and later in pueblo structures. Though the land was later inhabited by the Navajo, Jicarilla Apache and Ute Indians, the Anasazi's presence can still be seen in the region.

The Spanish passed through the area in the late 1700s and eventually settled in the eastern part of San Juan County in the early 1800s. It was not until the mid-1870s that the population of the area began to grow with the settlement of what was to become Farmingtown, later shortened to Farmington. The town began to blossom into a flourishing farm and ranch economy and was officially incorporated in 1901.San Juan County now is best known for its abundant supplies of natural gas and oil.
